Essential Items I Will Bring to Your Birth

Because some parents haven’t experienced childbirth before, it can be an overwhelming process. Adding a birth doula to your birthing team can provide you with the support and resources you desire. One of the many valuable ways, I, as a birth doula, aid in the journey is by bringing items to your birth that will enhance your comfort and promote an overall satisfying experience. Here’s a rundown of what you can expect me to bring to your labor and delivery.

1. Comfort Measures

Massage Tools

I bring tools like essential oils, lotion or massage tools to help relieve tension and discomfort during labor. I often use these to provide soothing massages or counter pressure, which can significantly ease pain.

Rice Sock and Cold Packs

Warm compresses can provide comfort to your lower back or abdomen, while cold packs can help reduce swelling and soothe sore areas. I come prepared with these items to help you find relief.

All the Balls

A birth or peanut ball is a fantastic tool for helping you find comfortable positions during labor. I will bring one to facilitate movement, encourage optimal fetal positioning, and support your comfort. I’ve also been known to carry a C.U.B. in my car. If you’re unsure of what that is, find out more here

2. Hydration and Nutrition

Water Bottles

Staying hydrated during labor is crucial. I bring electrolytes, and coconut water for you to sip on throughout the process, ensuring you stay refreshed.

Snacks

Labor can be long, and I understand the importance of nutrition while running this marathon. I bring light snacks (like granola bars or dried fruit) for you to nibble on, especially in early labor.

3. Support Equipment

Positioning Aids

I bring many items to encourage baby into an optimal position if there’s indication baby isn’t in the best position. Some include: a rebozo (a traditional Mexican shawl), sheets, and a yoga block. These tools can assist with movement and provide extra stability and comfort.

4. Educational Materials

Birth Plan Templates

If you have a birth plan, I can bring copies for your providers.

5. Personal Touches

Photo or Video Equipment

If you’re interested in documenting your birth, I snap photos that I feel mom and dad will want to look back on.

Conclusion

The role of a birth doula goes beyond emotional reassurance; it includes a carefully curated selection of items designed to enhance your labor experience. From comfort measures to relaxation aids, I come prepared to create a supportive and empowering atmosphere as you welcome your baby. Knowing what I bring can help you feel more at ease and excited about your upcoming birth. Embrace this journey—you’re in great hands!
