I’ve had my baby, so what can a postpartum doula do?

Many describe welcoming their new baby as a beautiful experience, but with this major life-shift can come feelings of overwhelm and depletion. As you navigate this transition, having the right support can make all the difference. One option many new parents consider is hiring a postpartum doula. But how often can you expect a postpartum doula to come and support you? Let’s dive deeper!

Many postpartum doulas will cater their services to meet your specific needs, so discuss with them during a consultation. It’s important to also discuss your preferences with the perspective doula.

The following are options many doulas offer:

  1. Daily Support: Many families opt for daily visits, especially in the first few weeks after birth. This can range from a few hours to a full day. Daily support is particularly beneficial for new parents who are adjusting to the demands of a newborn, allowing them to catch up on rest, learn infant care techniques, or receive help with household tasks.

  2. Every Few Days: Some families may find that having a postpartum doula come every two to three days works better for them. This schedule still provides regular support while giving parents some time to practice their skills and settle into a routine.

  3. Weekly Check-ins: If you’re feeling more confident or if you have other support systems in place, you might choose to have your doula come once a week. This can be great for ongoing guidance and emotional support, especially as you navigate the changes in the early months.

  4. As-Needed Basis: For those who may want more flexibility, arranging for your doula to come on an as-needed basis is also an option. You can call upon their support during particularly challenging days or when you have specific questions or concerns.

It’s important to consider several factors when deciding how often you might want a postpartum doula:

  • Your Recovery: If you had a challenging birth or are recovering from a cesarean section, you may need more frequent support.

  • Multiple Births: Families with twins or higher-order multiples may benefit from more intensive support.

  • Emotional Well-Being: If you’re feeling overwhelmed or experiencing signs of postpartum and anxiety disorder, having more frequent visits can provide crucial emotional support.

  • Support Network: If you have family or friends nearby, you might opt for fewer doula visits, as they can help fill in the gaps.

How to Decide

When considering how often you’d like a postpartum doula to visit, take some time to reflect on your needs:

  • Assess Your Support System: Who else is helping you? What gaps do you feel need to be filled?

  • Consider Your Schedule: How will your routine look in the first few weeks? Are there particular times when you’ll need more help?

  • Communicate Openly: When you find a doula you connect with, discuss your expectations. A good doula will work with you to create a plan that suits your family’s needs.

The postpartum period is a unique time that requires care, support, and understanding. The frequency of visits from a postpartum doula can be tailored to fit your individual situation, ensuring you receive the assistance you need to thrive. Whether it’s daily, weekly, or on an as-needed basis, having a postpartum doula can provide invaluable support as you embark on this incredible journey of parenthood.

Remember, the most important thing is to prioritize your well-being and seek the help that feels right for you!
