I often get asked, “Do-what?” The word doula isn’t one heard often, unless you know someone that has had a baby, or is currently pregnant. People often ask what exactly do you do? Simply put, a doula is a trained professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to expecting families throughout the perinatal year and beyond.
Before labor begins, a doula's role is to offer education and informational knowledge so the family can make informed decisions on the care of their family. This includes discussing birth preferences, helping parents understand their options, addressing any concerns or questions, educating them on the role of a doula, how to interview their provider, among other topics. Doulas often provide resources on childbirth education, pain management techniques, and relaxation strategies, tailoring their support to the individual needs and preferences of the family.
The doula's presence during labor is invaluable. We offer continuous emotional support, which can greatly reduce stress and anxiety. This might involve helping mom with breathing techniques, massage, or positioning to ease discomfort. Unlike medical professionals who focus on clinical care, doulas offer a comforting presence, advocating for the birthing person's preferences and ensuring that they remain informed and empowered throughout the process.
After the baby arrives, doulas assist with the “golden hour”. We may help with breastfeeding support, offer guidance on newborn care, and provide reassurance during the early days of parenthood. This support can be especially crucial in helping new parents navigate the challenges of postpartum recovery and adjusting to their new roles as their family expands.
